Why PVC Yoga Mats are so harmful!

Why PVC Yoga Mats are so harmful!

All of our products are proudly 100% PVC free! But not many people understand just what that means for the environment, and for you.

Many cheap Yoga mats are made of Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or vinyl. It is one of the most environmentally hazardous consumer materials ever produced.

Not only is PVC catastrophic to the environment, but it is extremely dangerous to human health throughout its entire life cycle of production, use, and disposal. Mainly because roughly 30% of the worlds supply of chlorine is used in the making of it. Simply, PVC is the single worst plastic according to several health organisations. Greenpeace has been lobbying to stop the use of PVC because of the dioxin produced during its manufacture. It is toxic for humans, the environment and unfortunately many yoga mats are 100% PVC.

You would think PVC in itself would be the worst thing about cheaply made Yoga mats, but unfortunately that is just one aspect. PVC in its full form, is a hard plastic, so to soften this plastic and create flexibility in the Yoga Mat, chemicals like phthalates are added to the PVC.

Phthalates are linked to reproductive issues, including shorter pregnancy duration and premature breast development in girls. Over time these phthalates leach out, especially in warmer temperatures, like in hot Yoga studios. Phthalate particles then cling to dust, which can be inhaled.

PVC can't be recycled due to the toxins embedded within it, and when it's incinerated or buried in landfills it releases dioxin, a known carcinogen. There is no safe way to create, use or destroy these mats.

PVC became the plastic of choice because it's cheap, but when your putting a number on the effects it has on the environment and the harm it has on our health, a PVC FREE Yoga mat is priceless. So when your shopping for your next Yoga mat, ask yourself, what is this mat made of?

All Yogi Peace Club Yoga mats are 100% PVC FREE, made from natural tree rubber. With No phthalates or toxic chemicals. No Latex or Silicon or heavy metals such lead.

Brinkley Davies grew up surrounded by the water. At a young age she decided to be part of the ocean conservation movement. By using the social media platform she has been able to raise awareness and spread the word on many issues worldwide that are being battled by conservationists and scientists, in order to save the oceans, the planet, and thousands of species.

    LIFE IS BETTER WITH YOGA

    LIFE IS BETTER WITH YOGA

The benefits of Yoga have been recognized in India for thousands of years, however it is only now that western medicine is beginning to do the clinical research needed to scientifically document its benefits.

Timothy Mc Call, M.D. cites "Western science is starting to provide some concrete clues as to how yoga works to improve healthheal aches and pains, and keep sickness at bay."

Swami Vivekananda first introduced yoga to the United States in 1893, however it wasn't until the 1950's and 60s that Yoga became more well known when Pop culture icons, such as Marilyn Monroe and the Beatles introduced it to their fans.  Fast track to 2016, what was once associated with a alternative hippie culture has now become a part of mainstream life and health and wellness movement.

In 2013 Tim Mc Call M.D collated scientific studies from India as well as the West to identify and explain how yoga can both prevent disease and help you recover from it. These are some of the benefits that were found from practicing yoga regularly:

    - Lowers stress

    - Improves the immune system

    - Tones the body, builds strength and flexibility

    - Balances the endocrine system

    - Creates a general state of wellbeing

    - Regulates your adrenal glands

    - Assists in weight control

    - Increases energy.

Yoga Asanas can be part of your everyday. Waking each morning with 10 minutes of yoga which could be as simple as, breathing while is a comfortable seated position, then moving into sun salutes and a few rounds of the warrior poses.

If you cant get to a yoga class, home practice can be just as beneficial. I love Yoga Glo which is a paid subscription to some of the worlds most well respected yoga teachers. There are classes for all levels of yoga. But makes it so easy is that you can practice in your own home.

Feeling the benefits of Yoga are almost instantaneous, as soon as you step on your yoga mat there is a feeling of being grounded and connected to the mind and body.

All in all, Life ifs better with yoga.

    WE LOVE PRINTS

    WE LOVE PRINTS

Designing Yoga mats is my passion. It is my favourite part of Yogi Peace Club.

As well as running YPC I am a yoga teacher too. I love putting energy into the yoga mat print designs, and then seeing a student walk into class with their beloved mat. One student once explained that when they are not practicing on their own Yoga mat "they feel like they are sleeping in someone else's bed".

Your yoga mat becomes part of you. You put energy into your yoga mat every time you are on it. There is a part of you invested into your mat when you are practicing on it. Your blood, sweat and tears.

Each YPC print is designed to reflect certain persons personality. Some prints are more calming and soothing while other are bright, vibrant and energizing. When people are purchasing their first yoga mat I ask them to stand on each mat and feel what print feels right for them and their practice. They know straight away.

Here are some photos and some of the inspiration behind the Spring 16 Collection online now.
