How to Meditate
A Simple Guide to Creating a Home Meditation Practice
Meditation offers a powerful way to calm the mind, relax the body and reconnect with your inner self. With regular practice, it can support emotional balance, a healthy nervous system, improved immunity and a deeper sense of presence.
One of the most effective ways to begin is by creating a dedicated space for your practice. Whether it’s a quiet corner or a sunny spot in your garden, a consistent setting helps cultivate stillness and focus.
Yogi Peace Club founder and yoga teacher Em shares her essential steps for setting up a beautiful, intentional space for meditation at home.

"My meditation practice is simple, but it’s everything. I always take a few minutes to set my space - light incense, roll out my mat and settle in with my bolster. It’s in those quiet moments I feel most grounded and connected. Below I have shared my 5 step process on how to set-up your own practice I hope it resonates."

1. SAUCHA
Clear Your Space
Start by purifying your environment. Tidy the area and remove any distractions. Cleanse the space energetically with incense, essential oils, sage, or palo santo. A clear, uncluttered space invites a peaceful mindset. Also consider getting into nature.
2. ASANA
Posture
Choose a supported, comfortable seat: a meditation cushion, bolster, or folded blanket. Traditional postures like Sukhasana (Easy Pose) or Virasana (Hero Pose) help maintain a tall spine and promote alert stillness. You can also sit in a chair if more accessible or consider lying down in a supported position.

3. PRANAYAMA
Breath Awareness
Breathwork is a powerful way to settle the mind. Begin seated on your yoga or meditation mat. Take a few deep, conscious breaths. You might use a pranayama technique, such as alternate nostril breathing or three-part breath, to focus. Afterward, allow your breath to flow naturally, gently guiding your awareness inward.
4. DHYANA
Focus
Gently bring your attention to a single point. This could be your breath, a candle flame, a mantra, or simply a sense of stillness. If your mind wanders, return to your chosen focus with kindness and curiosity. Here are five simple yogic mantras that you can try.
So Hum
(I am that)
A grounding breath-aligned mantra for inner awareness.
Om Shanti Shanti Shanti
(Peace, peace, peace)
Invokes peace in body, mind, and spirit.
Om
(The universal sound)
A powerful focal point to quiet the mind.
Sat Nam
(Truth is my identity)
A Kundalini mantra that brings clarity and authenticity.
Ham-Sa
(I am that)
A natural mantra synced with the inhale (Ham) and exhale (Sa), aiding mindfulness.

5. Sankalpa
Intention
Before you begin, set a heartfelt intention. Whether your aim is peace, clarity, or healing, let this guide your practice. Revisit this intention whenever your mind drifts - and return with compassion. Try these five simple intentions:
I am calm, clear and grounded.
I honour this time for myself.
With each breath, I return to presence.
Peace begins with me.
I am open to growth and inner stillness.
